I love New York. You can pop out of the Underworld in Central Park, hail a taxi, head down Fifth Avenue with a giant hellhound loping behind you, and nobody even looks at you funny.” Probably an exaggeration but Percy Jackson, Rick Riordan’s famous hero, is not wrong. So without further ado, here are 10 reasons you must visit New York at least once.
New York is the definitive city for this. It truly is a concrete jungle with some of the tallest buildings in the world shadowing you from the summer sun. Take a walk down Fifth Avenue (without the hellhound) and you’ll know what I mean.
New York is home to some of the best restaurants in the world. But that’s not all. Its ethnic diversity ensures that the different cuisines you try out in the city are truly authentic, having been prepared by people who have been born and brought up in that culture.
What can one say about New York’s most famous landmark? The true definition of city lights, Times Square is the best place to look out for good food and a happening night life. Chances are good that you may even see some of your favorite stars shooting for a film or series there. And then of course, there’s the New Year party.
For those of you who are culturally inclined, the museums in New York City offer everything and then some. The Metropolitan Museum of Arts, the American Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Modern Art all conspire to leave you begging for more. One visit is definitely not enough.
Break out the credit cards! Fifth Avenue is a shopaholic’s dream. Everyone who is anyone has a store in this vibrant place and they’re all waiting for you to visit. To top it all off, the shops stay open till 2 a.m. in Times Square. Need I say more?
Come on, you know you want to. Bragging rights are guaranteed here. This definitely increases your cachet at any meet. Think about it. Don’t you want to drop a “Well, when I was in New York City…” or “The Rockefeller Center was ok, but…” into a conversation?
The Ethnic Diversity
New York is home to millions. People from every culture, region and ethnic background have made their home in this city and offer up pieces of their culture through restaurants and stores. Get in the subway and you’re guaranteed to see pretty much every different culture, race and creed traveling with you.
Lights, lights everywhere! The city itself looks like a giant Christmas spectacle. The Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Center is not to be missed. Then there are those crazy Christmas sales…
This is one city where you can see the most famous celebrities be just who they really are – normal people. New Yorkers tend to treat them normally, so don’t be surprised if you see Kim Kardashian emerging from a Fifth Avenue store or Leonardo di Caprio purchasing a coffee without the attendant crowd. Just don’t freak out. That’s so uncool.
So there’s the Yankees stadium or Madison Square Garden. Whatever your inclination New York probably has the venue for it. Enough said.
